We are more than a backcountry skier organization. We are grateful that TSVI operates the ski resort - many of us buy passes and enjoy the lift-provided recreation. We are not “anti-development activists” but rather a consortium of citizens concerned about the possibility of over-development in the fragile Taos Ski Valley that could have adverse effects to the environment, water, forest access, and local socioeconomics.

NEW DEVELOPMENT: Village of TSV making a move to prohibit camping and constrain overnight parking in the Hiker Lot at the Trailhead to the Historic Williams Lake/Wheeler Peak Wilderness.

On March 21, 2025, the Village of TSV had the adoption of two new Ordinances on its Agenda. One of which was to change allowed use of the Hiker Lot in the Kachina Basin. Members of TMA got involved by preparing to give public comment at that Council meeting. Our group also drafted this to the VTSV Town Manager Rick Bellis: “TMA requests that VTSV administration cancel the consideration of this Ordinance until they can, along with (and championed) by the Forest Service, hold in-person public forums to consider the main issues which are 1) improving the Twinning corridor, and 2) managing the maintenance and operation of the Hiker Lot. At those hearings all aspects of the public passageway from the HIker Lot to the Wilderness be presented: deeds, easements, and any other documents pertaining to the desired action. The public has due process and first amendment rights to speak out about any proposed action that affects citizen access to public lands.”

The Village of TSV Council moved to postpone the consideration of this Ordinance at the beginning of the March 21 meeting, before the Public Comments. Many of our members gave their comments anyway. The Council listened and we think the outcome temporarily positive. Please navigate to our Issues/Access pages to learn more.
